<![CDATA[ Marie Claire ]]> https://www.marieclaire.com Wed, 10 Jul 2024 03:42:49 +0000 en <![CDATA[ Jennifer Lawrence Transforms the Fall Shacket Trend Into a Summer Essential ]]> Last week, Jennifer Lawrence revived the jelly sandal trend with nothing more than a walk around her neighborhood. Today, she's convincing anyone who caught her en route to her car that the fall shacket trend is actually a summer essential.

On Tuesday, July 9, Jennifer Lawrence was photographed in the celebrity version of daytime pajamas: a oversize shacket by Leset layered over breezy drawstring trousers. The hem of her relaxed pants puddled around a pair of white sneakers.

The shacket trend—defined by oversize shirts styled as jackets—typically makes its annual comeback during the fall. It'll arrive in the form of cushy flannels and cuddly teddy fabrics, evoking an afternoon spent apple picking (or just picking up cider from the grocery store). But Jennifer Lawrence has brought the extra-oversize layer into the 91-degrees Fahrenheit present, simply by pairing it back to pants with plenty of movement. It helps that she was hopping in a car with blasting AC—and she was accessorizing with a Hydroflask.

Jennifer Lawrence is hardly the first celebrity to treat shirting like a relaxed outer layer. Last month, Selena Gomez wore summer's easiest shirt trend with black pants and Zara heels. Several A-list approved brands like Leset have cranked out summertime shackets with matching shorts that are destined for street style cameos, including Frankie Shop, Staud, and Donni.

There's no overstating the actress's commitment to the summertime shacket. For a walk in late June, Lawrence paired the parachute pants trend with her same trusty shacket and black mules. That time, she left the light layer unbuttoned to reveal a white T-shirt, and she toted an extra-oversize bag by St. Agni. (That makes three trends in her outfit: Oversize bags like hers have popped up in runway collections from Coach to Ferragamo.)

Celebrities play by different seasonal styling rules than the rest of us. They're often jumping from an air conditioned town car to a frosty premiere space or talk show (and back), so they can dress for the weather they want instead of the weather they have. Still, it's easy to imagine picking up a shacket like Jennifer Lawrence's to complete an easy summer work outfit or to throw on over linen pants. And when fall rolls back around, all our closets will be ready for the real heavy-duty layering.

<![CDATA[ Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie “Haven’t Communicated” with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle “For Quite a While Now” ]]> It seems that Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie’s relationship with various members of the royal family are changing—and that the Princess of Wales’ battle with cancer has spurred on some of the shift.

According to a source speaking with OK, Kate’s diagnosis “changed Prince William’s relationship with Beatrice and Eugenie,” they said. As King Charles’ slimmed-down monarchy became even more so in Kate’s absence—as well as, at times, the King himself, as he too was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year—the York sisters are “very willing to step up and do more at this current time to help,” the source said. “They’re very fond of their cousin [William] and their uncle [Charles], and they want to do everything they can to support them. And they believe in the institution they grew up in.”

The source added that “Bea and Eugenie can’t imagine what William is going through right now, and it was an honor for them to give him some support” at a Buckingham Palace garden party back in May, they said. “The York sisters were determined not to let him down.”

Of their relationship with Prince Harry—who Eugenie in particular has always been close to—OK reports that the sisters “haven’t communicated” with Harry or Meghan Markle “for quite a while now,” a source said. “They are nowhere near as close as they once were.” They added that “Beatrice and Eugenie have firmly pledged their allegiance to the royal family,” but that doesn’t mean that they’re cutting the Sussexes off. Both Eugenie and her husband, Jack Brooksbank, “are very careful about what they say to friends, because they don’t want to be seen as badmouthing Harry or Meghan,” the source added. “There’s still a friendship there, but it’s not like the close family bond they had before Harry moved to America.”

Royal author Tom Quinn said that Beatrice and Eugenie feel that “they have far more in common with Harry and Meghan than with any other part of the family,” he said, though it appears that the gulf between the York sisters and the rest of the royal family is closing in light of the events of 2024.

“It is perfectly possible to be involved in a deep, public family rift and be on amiable terms with all involved,” royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams said, per OK. “Princess Eugenie, who with her husband Jack Brooksbank is mainly based in the Algarve [in Portugal], had Harry and Meghan as visitors. They’ve got on over the years, and she and her husband, Jack Brooksbank, were resident[s] for a period at Frogmore Cottage whilst the Sussexes were in California before they were evicted.”

But the sisters’ relationship with the rest of the royal family is growing closer, and of Eugenie, Fitzwilliams added that “She posted on Instagram that she was ‘delighted to support my family,’” he said of an Instagram post Eugenie made following the May garden party. “These are very meaningful words at the moment.”

Of the ongoing rift between William and Harry, Fitzwilliams said “It would be of benefit to all if it were resolved. But until that happens, Beatrice and Eugenie, who conceivably could act as go-betweens, are undoubtedly supporting William and are likely to give him their full backing if there are further attacks by the Sussexes on the royal family,” he said, pointing particularly to something like Spare, Harry’s 2023 memoir that did little to mend family relations.

<![CDATA[ Princess Beatrice Remixes the Wimbledon White Dress Code in a Bright Floral Dress ]]> Wimbledon's all-white dress code might only apply to the players on the court, but spectators sometimes abide by the rules in true fandom spirit. Cheering on the athletes in the stands on Tuesday, July 9, was Princess Beatrice of York, who put her own spin on the uniform in a vibrant floral dress.

On the ninth day of the games, Princess Beatrice was photographed alongside her husband, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. She was captured wearing a white printed lace shirt dress from Monique Lhuillier's Spring 2024 ready-to-wear collection. The $3,295 gown featured a button-down top with elbow-length sleeves and a collar, plus a built-in belt tied at the waist and a flared-out scallop midi skirt. Beatrice's dress also came adorned all over with vibrant multicolored florals—pink, blue, and green popping against the white lace.

Not much can be seen from the skirt down, but Beatrice paired her ensemble for the afternoon with a mix of silver and gold bracelets and carried a raffia straw mini clutch in hand. As for glam, she wore her light brown hair in a loose half-up, half-down style. She kept her makeup simple for the occasion, opting for a subtle black eyeliner and neutral pink lips.

Beatrice's appearance at the 2024 Wimbledon championship marks the end of the Royal Family's hiatus from the annual tennis tournament. So far, no senior members of the Royal Family have attended the event, but Princess Beatrice's sighting could possibly indicate their return to the stands in the coming days. Princess Kate hopes to attend the Wimbledon finals this weekend, if she feels well enough amid cancer treatments. Princess Kate's parents—Carole and Michael Middleton—attended Day Four of Wimbledon last Thursday.

Beatrice also showed her support for London's biggest tennis competition on Wednesday, July 3. She attended an afterparty co-hosted by tennis star Maria Sharapova in a black leather jacket. The standouts of her look that evening, however, were her long-sleeve turquoise shirt and colorblock midi skirt by Roksanda—which happened to be the same pieces she wore at the 2015 Royal Ascot.

Wimbledon isn't the only place where Beatrice has showcased her affinity for florals. If there's one thing Beatrice has proven over this summer alone, it's that she's a fan of her wardrobe staples, and the dainty print happens to be a huge part of it. The classic pattern—which has also been a frequent presence in her sister Princess Eugenie's wardrobe—has taken shape in a range of fun forms and silhouettes this season.

Last week, the Princess of York was spotted in London attending an art presentation for Mr. Brainwash, hosted at the Claredon Fine Art and Jack Barclay Bentley. There, she took florals the muted route in a mauve and chalk gown by The Kooples. The semi-sheer piece had long sleeves and a flowy skirt. She styled her look with beige pumps from Kurt Geiger.

Princess Beatrice also wore back-to-back flowers for the 2024 Royal Ascot. At the event, she wore a floral-printed midi ensemble from Zimmermann, which she paired with Roger Vivier heels and, inspired by that of Princess Kate, a flower appliqué headpiece by Juliette Millinery.

This summer marks the peak of high-luxe tenniscore fashion trends, thanks to the likes of this year’s hit film Challengers. Princess Beatrice proves that, whether you're a player or a spectator, there's nothing quite like florals to elevate a tennis look—even at the sporting's most prestigious event. Ahead, shop similar floral dresses inspired by her Wimbledon look.

<![CDATA[ Prince Harry Is Reportedly “Stunned” at the Negative Reaction to His ESPY Award Win, and Is Finding the Criticism a “Bitter Pill to Swallow” ]]> As Thursday’s ESPYs ceremony approaches—where Prince Harry will be honored with the Pat Tillman Award for Service at the L.A. event—Tatler reports that Harry is “stunned” at the negative reaction to his win, and finding it a “bitter pill to swallow.”

Following ESPN’s announcement that Harry had won the award—which is given annually to “a person with a strong connection to sports” and named in honor of Tillman, a former NFL player turned U.S. Army Ranger who died in 2004 in Afghanistan at just 27 years old—backlash ensued. Perhaps most surprisingly was condemnation from Tillman’s mother, Mary Tillman, who told The Daily Mail, among other comments, that she thought there were other “far more fitting” people who should have won the award.

ESPN defended Harry, who is a veteran of the British Army—where he served for 10 years, including two tours in Afghanistan—and who founded the Invictus Games 10 years ago to help wounded, sick, and injured servicemen and servicewomen, both veterans and those still serving, find community through sport. The network said Harry was chosen for “his tireless work in making a positive impact for the veteran community through the power of sport.” After the backlash surrounding Harry’s selection, ESPN told TMZ Sports in a statement “While we understand not everyone will agree with all honorees selected for any award, The Invictus Games Foundation does incredible work, and ESPN believes this is a cause worth celebrating.”

Harry is reportedly saddened by the public’s reaction to his win, especially as it relates to his work with the military and with veterans—causes extremely close to his heart. “Harry’s legacy on Invictus, the things he has achieved—that’s his real passion,” a source told The Telegraph. “This is the space in which he truly feels at home. It is something he deeply cares about. The reaction certainly took the shine off the award.”

A television consultant that works for both Disney and ESPN said, per Tatler, that Harry’s involvement in the ESPYs would draw “insane eyeballs” to the televised show, adding that “the fact that so many people are talking about Harry and this honor will delight those at the top. They will stand firm on him getting it and also, behind closed doors, be excited that such a decision has prompted such interest in this night. Like it or loathe it, Harry draws interest.”

Meghan Markle is rumored to be attending the ESPYs with her husband, which will be held in Los Angeles and hosted by Meghan’s longtime friend, Serena Williams. The awards will air this Thursday, July 11, at 8 p.m. on ABC.

<![CDATA[ A Guide to the Dragonseeds in 'House of the Dragon' ]]> Spoilers for House of the Dragon season 2, episodes 1-4 ahead. Like a fan-favorite character once said, the Game of Thrones universe has a soft spot for bastards and broken things. This affinity continues in the prequel series House of the Dragon, which returned for its second season in June 2024 with some surprising new characters in the orbit of its dueling Greens and Blacks. In addition to setting up the early battles of the Targaryen family's civil war known as the Dance of Dragons, the series also introduces some common folk populating King's Landing and Driftmark. While the inclusion may have seemed surprising to some TV fans, readers of author George R. R. Martin's original Fire and Blood book series know that no scene included in this stacked fantasy series is truly random. (Let's keep the final Thrones seasons out of our minds for that.)

While GoT had Jon Snow and Ellaria Sand (we're ignoring Ramsey), HotD has the dragonseeds, many of whom we were already introduced to before season 2, episode 4. These men (and eventually women) are set up to play monumental roles in the fight for the Iron Throne, even if they aren't all introduced within season 2. Read on for a primer on the dragonseeds we've met on House of the Dragon so far, including some extra details from Fire and Blood.

What is a dragonseed in 'House of the Dragon?'

caraxes house of the dragon

In the era of Westeros where dragons roamed the sky and Targaryens were on the throne, "dragonseed" was the term for bastards of Valyrian descent. A dragonseed is fathered or mothered by someone from a dragon-riding Valyrian family, typically a Targaryen or a Velaryon. Not all children of Valyrian descent inherit dragon-riding skills, but a great amount do. Since the ability to ride dragons is passed down through blood (look up "why Valyrians can ride dragons" for a fun yet harrowing time), a dragonseed doesn't need to be officially claimed by their family to be able to ride a dragon, though that is likely the only way they'd get anywhere near one.

Being a dragonseed is dangerous at any time before Robert's Rebellion since the odds are they could become cannon fodder for a potential heir securing his throne. As Ulf says, “A dragonseed must watch his own neck when he has no white cloak guardsman to do it for him.” However, at a time when dragons are the most valuable weapon in a war, there is a chance the dragonseeds could become indispensable.

Let's meet some of them below.

Alyn and Addam of Hull

Clinton Liberty as Addam of Hull and Abubakar Salim as Alyn of Hull, in 'House of the Dragon'

Clinton Liberty as Addam and as Abubakar Salim Alyn of Hull in House of the Dragon. (Image credit: Ollie Upton/HBO)

Early in season 2, we meet brothers Addam (Clinton Liberty) and Alyn (Abubakar Salim), who grew up in the Driftmark town of Hull. Remember when Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint) was thought dead after a battle in the Stepstones? It turns out that Alyn is the one who saved him, and, as his brother Addam hints in episode 2, that's not the only connection the men have to the Sea Snake. In episode 4, Rhaenys (Eve Best_ pretty much confirms that Alyn and Addam are the bastard children of Corlys, adding that Corlys should reward Alyn for saving his life. She also mentions that the pair shouldn't have to hide in the shadows, which is some mighty foreshadowing.

In Fire and Blood, Alyn and Addam are confirmed to be of Velaryon blood, though it's unsure whether they are Laenor (John MacMillan) or Corlys's sons. One passage reads, "That Addam and Alyn were dragonseed no man who looked upon them could doubt, though their mother steadfastly refused to name their father." (Judging by Laenor's sexuality, we suspect it's going to be either Corlys or even his late brother Vaemond on the show.) As for their dragonseed heritage, there was a lovely nod in episode 2, where we got a lengthy shot of Addam admiring his half-brother(?) Laenor's dragon, Seasmoke.

Ulf the White

Tom Bennett as Ulf the White (center), sitting with other men at a table holding candles, in 'House of the Dragon'

Tom Bennett as Ulf the White, spilling the beans on his parentage in House of the Dragon. (Image credit: Ollie Upton/HBO)

Ulf the White (Tom Bennett) is one of the residents of King's Landing, who we first see among the crowds learning of the ratcatchers' untimely deaths after the incident known as Blood and Cheese. In episode 3, we properly meet Ulf at a tavern, where he's regaling his crowd of friends with the story of his parentage. According to Ulf, he's the bastard son of Baelon the Brave, and therefore half-brother to Daemon (Matt Smith) and the late King Viserys (Paddy Considine). (In actuality, Baelon was Jaehaerys' heir to the Iron Thorne, but he died before his father, leading to the Great Council of Harrenhal where Viserys was chosen as king over Rhaenys.)

Ulf's friends do not believe him, as he doesn't have white Targaryen hair, but Ulf points out that Rhaenyra's son Jace (Harry Collett) is a brunette. He also dubs Jace the rightful heir to the Iron Throne, though he quickly toasts Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) once the usurper shows up at the brothel. House of the Dragon has yet to confirm Ulf's parentage, but Fire and Blood fans know that the loudmouth's claim has some truth to it.

Hugh Hammer

Kieran Bew as Hugh Hammer, with Ellora Torchia, in 'House of the Dragon'

Hugh Hammer (Kieran Bew) with his partner Kat (Ellora Torchia) in House of the Dragon. (Image credit: Ollie Upton/HBO)

In the first episodes of season 2, one of the common folk we meet is Hugh Hammer (Kieran Bew), a blacksmith whose family is struggling through the Velaryon blockade of the Gullet. Upon a first look, he represents the many residents of King's Landing who face starvation, along with his partner Kat (Ellora Torchia) and their ill daughter. However, as you can tell by the uncommon white hair, Hammer has some Velaryon heritage.

House of the Dragon has yet to reveal Hammer's heritage, but per Fire and Blood, he's a "blacksmith’s bastard” with “hands so strong that he was said to be able to twist steel bars." The passage continues, "Through largely untrained in the art of war, his size and strength made him a fearsome foe. His weapon of choice was the warhammer, with which he delivered crushing, killing blows.”

Are there any female Dragonseeds?

As of season 2, episode 4, all of the dragonseeds introduced in House of the Dragon have been men. However, the most powerful dragonriders (or at least the most beloved) in the Thrones TV universe have been women—so there has to be at least one female dragonseed incoming. Hopefully, they'll make their appearance sooner rather than later.

<![CDATA[ Scarlett Johansson Transforms the Gingham Trend Into a Red Carpet-Worthy Pattern ]]> Scarlett Johansson is hopping on the great gingham trend revival of summer 2024, and bringing the pattern to the red carpet. The actress wore a custom Prada matching gingham skirt set to the New York City premiere of her new movie Fly Me To The Moon last night.

While the summery plaid has been a constant in celebrity closets this season (most recently seen on Sophie Turner's summer shirt during a day date), the style hasn't gotten much play as evening attire. But Scarlett Johansson's Prada light mauve and white two-piece set makes the case for gingham after dark. Enter: glam gingham. The carefully tailored top features a high neck and no sleeves, lined with sparkly silver and pink embellishments, and cropped just above the waist. Two seams start at mid-bust and continue down the floor-length, structured skirt. A subtle slit revealed a pair of metallic silver open-toe stiletto heels.

Johansson was dressed by stylist Kate Young, who also works with stars like Dakota Johnson, Michelle Williams, Rachel Weisz, and Sienna Miller. Her accessories and glam were simple, yet sparkling. She wore two diamond-encrusted orbs dangling from her ears, the Durian Fruits earrings from the jewelry brand Taffin, and two bold brown diamond rings. Johansson's blonde hair was pulled into an up-do with soft curled tendrils. For makeup, she wore a glossy pink lip, summer's trending pink blush, and icy pink eyeshadow.

The feminine, pin-up-inspired look plays into the time period of the upcoming film and Johansson's role. Fly Me To The Moon takes place during the 1960s Space Race, and Johansson plays Kelly Jones, a marketing consultant who gets hired to fix NASA's public image and stage a fake moon landing as a back-up in case the real one flopped.

Back in the present, her take on the gingham trend is inspiring enough to shop. Scroll on for more gingham glam pieces.

<![CDATA[ Halle Berry, Glenn Close Added to the Star-Studded Cast of Kim Kardashian’s Upcoming Hulu Legal Drama ‘All’s Fair’ ]]> In addition to Kim Kardashian studying to become a lawyer someday, she is set to play one on television—as Marie Claire reported as far back as last December, Kardashian will star in a forthcoming Ryan Murphy-produced legal drama on Hulu, and two of her castmates have been revealed for the all-female ensemble: none other than Halle Berry and Glenn Close, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Kardashian is certainly no novice to television—she’s been on our screens for the better part of two decades—but it has largely been in the reality realm. Now, though, after Kardashian’s turn in Murphy’s American Horror Story: Delicate, she looks to be taking on more scripted projects, including All’s Fair, which will pair her toe-to-toe with acting veterans Berry and Close.

Halle Berry

Berry stars in the upcoming Netflix action thriller "The Union," out August 16. (Image credit: Alamy)

Glenn Close

Close was recently seen on "The New Look" on Apple TV+. (Image credit: Getty Images)

The show centers on an all-female law firm in Los Angeles, and, in addition to starring alongside Kardashian, Berry and Close will also be executive producers of the series with her and Murphy. “Per usual with Murphy’s shows, details about the roles Berry and Close will play are being kept quiet for now,” The Hollywood Reporter writes, though we do know Kardashian is playing a divorce attorney, and the show is being described as “a high-end, glossy and sexy adult procedural” by Murphy (and per Deadline).

Berry, of course, made history as the first Black woman (and, unfortunately, so far only) to win the Best Actress Oscar for her performance in 2001’s Monster’s Ball. She is also an Emmy winner for her role as the titular character in 1999’s Introducing Dorothy Dandridge, which aired on HBO. Berry will next be seen opposite Mark Wahlberg in the Netflix action thriller The Union, which comes out August 16.

Close, for her part, is an eight-time Academy Award nominee, three-time Emmy Award winner, and three-time Tony Award winner; she most recently starred in The New Look on Apple TV+, and recently completed filming on Lee Daniels’ The Deliverance, Seth Gordon’s Back in Action, and Max Barbakow’s Brothers. All’s Fair is a return to television legal dramas for Close, actually; she famously starred in the FX series Damages, as notorious lawyer Patty Hewes, Variety reports.

Of Kardashian’s turn to scripted television, “I keep saying this—she knew every line and I just thought she was so good,” Emma Roberts, Kardashian’s co-star in American Horror Story: Delicate, told Us Weekly. “I loved watching her, and it was really fun to work with her. And I just love that every season of that show, Ryan Murphy always makes a fun, surprise casting decision, and it’s as fun for the viewers as it is for the other actors on the show.”

Kardashian herself isn’t a lawyer yet, but she has been studying for her law degree since 2019. In 2021, she passed the “baby bar,” and, according to Kardashian herself, “I’m probably going to take the bar in February 2025,” she said at the 2023 TIME100 Summit in April of last year. “I think it’s, like, a 36 percent pass rate.”

Kim Kardashian

With "All's Fair," Kardashian is diving even deeper into scripted television, after nearly two decades in the reality television market. (Image credit: Getty Images)

If that timeline still holds, she will take the bar around the time All’s Fair premieres, as Deadline reports that the show is expected to begin production in late 2024 and premiere in early 2025.

Per E! News, Murphy said the project will focus on the “bond of women trying to get through an experience together,” and will lead Kardashian to channel her own personal connection to high-powered divorce attorney Laura Wasser, who handled Kardashian’s divorces for her marriages to both Kris Humphries and Kanye West.

<![CDATA[ Gigi Hadid Pairs the Divisive Jorts Trend With Fan-Favorite Adidas Sneakers ]]> Some fashion obsessives see the jorts trend—aka long jean shorts—and walk the other way. Gigi Hadid, however, is fully on-board with a jorts and Adidas sneakers summer.

Hadid took the divisive denim trend for a spin while strolling about New York City on Monday, July 8. Amid the heat and humidity, the 29-year-old wore a white, long-sleeved ribbed crop top hitting right above her navel.

Instead of micro mini bottoms, she styled her top with slouchy gray denim shorts—or jorts. The legs of her pants hit right at the knee and came frayed and distressed at the hems.

Hadid accessorized her look with Miu Miu's sunny yellow Arcadie handbag, which she customized with a multi-colored vintage scarf wrapped around the handles.

She completed her outfit with custom gold charm necklaces from Hart and Jacquie Aiche, along with cream-colored round sunglasses. But the real star of her #OOTD was a pair of cherry red Adidas Gazelle sneakers accented with the brand's iconic three white stripes.

Hadid's appearance in New York comes after she enjoyed a long holiday weekend with friends. On Sunday, July 7, she was spotted celebrating the birthday of her longtime friend, Leah McCarthy, wearing a lightweight cream V-neck sweater and a silk champagne slip skirt. She kept on her go-to charm necklaces and wore her hair in a half-up hairstyle, pink watermelon cocktail in hand and all.

But back to Hadid's latest outfit: She showcased her affinity for controversial styling once again, proving that the #jorts trend revival really here to stay and might even be foolproof. This isn't Hadid's first (nor will it be her last) rodeo in the baggy jean shorts department. She and her sister, Bella, have co-signed the style for years. (Who can forget Bella's iconic pinstriped bottoms?)

Other celebrities (and now, all of TikTok) have jumped to the divisive look, often pairing the loose denim shorts with a tiny tight top and trendy sneakers.

Hadid's choice in footwear this time around was a pair of red Aidadas Gazelles, which she's worn on a number of occasions, from strolling around New York to running errands and more. The brand's three-stripe sneakers, whether Sambas or Gazelles, have been all the rave over the years and are still at the top of the hottest sneaker food chain. Brightly-colored Adidas have made their way to the closets of celebs from Kendall Jenner, Harry Styles, and Olivia Wilde, just to name a few.

Hadid proves that most of the magic lies in the basics. In this case, it's a tight tee, baggy shorts, and colorful sneakers. Stock up on Gigi Hadid's casual summer look and shop similar gray jorts and red sneakers ahead.
