<![CDATA[ Marie Claire ]]> https://www.marieclaire.com Wed, 10 Jul 2024 03:45:17 +0000 en <![CDATA[ Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie “Haven’t Communicated” with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle “For Quite a While Now” ]]> It seems that Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie’s relationship with various members of the royal family are changing—and that the Princess of Wales’ battle with cancer has spurred on some of the shift.

According to a source speaking with OK, Kate’s diagnosis “changed Prince William’s relationship with Beatrice and Eugenie,” they said. As King Charles’ slimmed-down monarchy became even more so in Kate’s absence—as well as, at times, the King himself, as he too was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year—the York sisters are “very willing to step up and do more at this current time to help,” the source said. “They’re very fond of their cousin [William] and their uncle [Charles], and they want to do everything they can to support them. And they believe in the institution they grew up in.”

The source added that “Bea and Eugenie can’t imagine what William is going through right now, and it was an honor for them to give him some support” at a Buckingham Palace garden party back in May, they said. “The York sisters were determined not to let him down.”

Of their relationship with Prince Harry—who Eugenie in particular has always been close to—OK reports that the sisters “haven’t communicated” with Harry or Meghan Markle “for quite a while now,” a source said. “They are nowhere near as close as they once were.” They added that “Beatrice and Eugenie have firmly pledged their allegiance to the royal family,” but that doesn’t mean that they’re cutting the Sussexes off. Both Eugenie and her husband, Jack Brooksbank, “are very careful about what they say to friends, because they don’t want to be seen as badmouthing Harry or Meghan,” the source added. “There’s still a friendship there, but it’s not like the close family bond they had before Harry moved to America.”

Royal author Tom Quinn said that Beatrice and Eugenie feel that “they have far more in common with Harry and Meghan than with any other part of the family,” he said, though it appears that the gulf between the York sisters and the rest of the royal family is closing in light of the events of 2024.

“It is perfectly possible to be involved in a deep, public family rift and be on amiable terms with all involved,” royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams said, per OK. “Princess Eugenie, who with her husband Jack Brooksbank is mainly based in the Algarve [in Portugal], had Harry and Meghan as visitors. They’ve got on over the years, and she and her husband, Jack Brooksbank, were resident[s] for a period at Frogmore Cottage whilst the Sussexes were in California before they were evicted.”

But the sisters’ relationship with the rest of the royal family is growing closer, and of Eugenie, Fitzwilliams added that “She posted on Instagram that she was ‘delighted to support my family,’” he said of an Instagram post Eugenie made following the May garden party. “These are very meaningful words at the moment.”

Of the ongoing rift between William and Harry, Fitzwilliams said “It would be of benefit to all if it were resolved. But until that happens, Beatrice and Eugenie, who conceivably could act as go-betweens, are undoubtedly supporting William and are likely to give him their full backing if there are further attacks by the Sussexes on the royal family,” he said, pointing particularly to something like Spare, Harry’s 2023 memoir that did little to mend family relations.

<![CDATA[ Prince Harry Is Reportedly “Stunned” at the Negative Reaction to His ESPY Award Win, and Is Finding the Criticism a “Bitter Pill to Swallow” ]]> As Thursday’s ESPYs ceremony approaches—where Prince Harry will be honored with the Pat Tillman Award for Service at the L.A. event—Tatler reports that Harry is “stunned” at the negative reaction to his win, and finding it a “bitter pill to swallow.”

Following ESPN’s announcement that Harry had won the award—which is given annually to “a person with a strong connection to sports” and named in honor of Tillman, a former NFL player turned U.S. Army Ranger who died in 2004 in Afghanistan at just 27 years old—backlash ensued. Perhaps most surprisingly was condemnation from Tillman’s mother, Mary Tillman, who told The Daily Mail, among other comments, that she thought there were other “far more fitting” people who should have won the award.

ESPN defended Harry, who is a veteran of the British Army—where he served for 10 years, including two tours in Afghanistan—and who founded the Invictus Games 10 years ago to help wounded, sick, and injured servicemen and servicewomen, both veterans and those still serving, find community through sport. The network said Harry was chosen for “his tireless work in making a positive impact for the veteran community through the power of sport.” After the backlash surrounding Harry’s selection, ESPN told TMZ Sports in a statement “While we understand not everyone will agree with all honorees selected for any award, The Invictus Games Foundation does incredible work, and ESPN believes this is a cause worth celebrating.”

Harry is reportedly saddened by the public’s reaction to his win, especially as it relates to his work with the military and with veterans—causes extremely close to his heart. “Harry’s legacy on Invictus, the things he has achieved—that’s his real passion,” a source told The Telegraph. “This is the space in which he truly feels at home. It is something he deeply cares about. The reaction certainly took the shine off the award.”

A television consultant that works for both Disney and ESPN said, per Tatler, that Harry’s involvement in the ESPYs would draw “insane eyeballs” to the televised show, adding that “the fact that so many people are talking about Harry and this honor will delight those at the top. They will stand firm on him getting it and also, behind closed doors, be excited that such a decision has prompted such interest in this night. Like it or loathe it, Harry draws interest.”

Meghan Markle is rumored to be attending the ESPYs with her husband, which will be held in Los Angeles and hosted by Meghan’s longtime friend, Serena Williams. The awards will air this Thursday, July 11, at 8 p.m. on ABC.

<![CDATA[ Halle Berry, Glenn Close Added to the Star-Studded Cast of Kim Kardashian’s Upcoming Hulu Legal Drama ‘All’s Fair’ ]]> In addition to Kim Kardashian studying to become a lawyer someday, she is set to play one on television—as Marie Claire reported as far back as last December, Kardashian will star in a forthcoming Ryan Murphy-produced legal drama on Hulu, and two of her castmates have been revealed for the all-female ensemble: none other than Halle Berry and Glenn Close, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Kardashian is certainly no novice to television—she’s been on our screens for the better part of two decades—but it has largely been in the reality realm. Now, though, after Kardashian’s turn in Murphy’s American Horror Story: Delicate, she looks to be taking on more scripted projects, including All’s Fair, which will pair her toe-to-toe with acting veterans Berry and Close.

Halle Berry

Glenn Close

Close was recently seen on "The New Look" on Apple TV+. (Image credit: Getty Images)

The show centers on an all-female law firm in Los Angeles, and, in addition to starring alongside Kardashian, Berry and Close will also be executive producers of the series with her and Murphy. “Per usual with Murphy’s shows, details about the roles Berry and Close will play are being kept quiet for now,” The Hollywood Reporter writes, though we do know Kardashian is playing a divorce attorney, and the show is being described as “a high-end, glossy and sexy adult procedural” by Murphy (and per Deadline).

Berry, of course, made history as the first Black woman (and, unfortunately, so far only) to win the Best Actress Oscar for her performance in 2001’s Monster’s Ball. She is also an Emmy winner for her role as the titular character in 1999’s Introducing Dorothy Dandridge, which aired on HBO. Berry will next be seen opposite Mark Wahlberg in the Netflix action thriller The Union, which comes out August 16.

Close, for her part, is an eight-time Academy Award nominee, three-time Emmy Award winner, and three-time Tony Award winner; she most recently starred in The New Look on Apple TV+, and recently completed filming on Lee Daniels’ The Deliverance, Seth Gordon’s Back in Action, and Max Barbakow’s Brothers. All’s Fair is a return to television legal dramas for Close, actually; she famously starred in the FX series Damages, as notorious lawyer Patty Hewes, Variety reports.

Of Kardashian’s turn to scripted television, “I keep saying this—she knew every line and I just thought she was so good,” Emma Roberts, Kardashian’s co-star in American Horror Story: Delicate, told Us Weekly. “I loved watching her, and it was really fun to work with her. And I just love that every season of that show, Ryan Murphy always makes a fun, surprise casting decision, and it’s as fun for the viewers as it is for the other actors on the show.”

Kardashian herself isn’t a lawyer yet, but she has been studying for her law degree since 2019. In 2021, she passed the “baby bar,” and, according to Kardashian herself, “I’m probably going to take the bar in February 2025,” she said at the 2023 TIME100 Summit in April of last year. “I think it’s, like, a 36 percent pass rate.”

With "All's Fair," Kardashian is diving even deeper into scripted television, after nearly two decades in the reality television market. (Image credit: Getty Images)

If that timeline still holds, she will take the bar around the time All’s Fair premieres, as Deadline reports that the show is expected to begin production in late 2024 and premiere in early 2025.

Per E! News, Murphy said the project will focus on the “bond of women trying to get through an experience together,” and will lead Kardashian to channel her own personal connection to high-powered divorce attorney Laura Wasser, who handled Kardashian’s divorces for her marriages to both Kris Humphries and Kanye West.

<![CDATA[ Prince William and Princess Kate Are Adamant About Providing a “Fun and Carefree” Summer for Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis ]]> As the Princess of Wales’ attendance at Wimbledon—a staple in her summer diary—remains up in the air, one summer plan that is firmly in place for Kate and her family? The desire for this season to be “fun and carefree,” especially for Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, Tatler reports.

While nothing is confirmed for Kate as the rollercoaster of 2024 rolls on, “the family are said to be looking forward to spending time together at Balmoral,” Tatler reports, which is, of course, the royal family’s traditional summer retreat, where they head off to en masse every August. Going to Balmoral—which is nestled in the Scottish Highlands—“will give them much-needed space and rest after a challenging first half of 2024,” Tatler writes. “The place is particularly significant for [Prince] William, who describes Scotland as the source of some of his happiest memories, but also his saddest.”

It was the site of many fond family memories, but also William’s deepest tragedy—he, along with brother Prince Harry, were at Balmoral on August 31, 1997, when they learned their beloved mother, Princess Diana, had been killed in a car accident in Paris. Speaking in 2022, William said “I was in Balmoral when I was told that my mother had died,” he said. “Still in shock, I found sanctuary in the service at Crathie Kirk that very morning. And in the dark days of grief that followed, I found comfort and solace in the Scottish outdoors. As a result, the connection I feel to Scotland will forever run deep.”

While the Wales family of five’s attendance hasn’t been confirmed, Tatler reports the family has the option to stay at Tam-Na-Ghar, a cottage on the Balmoral estate frequently visited by Queen Victoria and left to William by his great-grandmother the Queen Mother after her death in 2002. “George, Charlotte, and Louis already know how dear Scotland is to both of us, and they’re starting to build their own happy memories here, too,” William said.

Former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond told The Mirror “It’s been one heck of a year for the royal family so far, and nothing would please the King more than to have his close family gathered together in the peace of Balmoral for a time to take stock together, mark the passing of an incredibly difficult few months, and look to the future,” she said. King Charles, of course, has also been diagnosed with cancer this year, as has Kate, and both are currently still receiving treatment.

Of Kate, Bond said that the royal family will “want to surround her with love, support, and renewed strength,” she said. “The princess will want to make the summer months as fun and carefree for the children as she possibly can after everything she’s been through.”

The King is said to enjoy reading to his grandchildren, playing cards, and enjoying picnics, “as well as riding and walking in Prince George’s Wood, the arboretum named after Charles’ eldest grandson,” Tatler writes. “After the turbulent few months they have endured, what more could the Wales family want?”

Royal editor Emily Nash said that “Both William and Kate are very hands-on parents—they take the kids to school, attend sports matches and concerts, and try to be home for bedtime as much as they can,” she said. “While Kate [was] in hospital, William [was] at home keeping things as normal as possible.”

If Balmoral isn't on the table, the Wales family of five will likely head off to Anmer Hall in Norfolk, their country home that they adore. (Image credit: Matt Porteous/Prince and Princess of Wales)

Though Kate herself said that she wasn’t out of the woods yet, a corner seems to have been firmly turned for the better, and, as opposed to the tense first half of 2024, hopefully this summer will be as fun and carefree as the Wales family hopes it will be. The Mirror reports that, if Balmoral isn’t in their plans, “an extended break at Anmer Hall in Norfolk seems likely,” the outlet writes of the family’s country home. “The residence, often described as their favorite, offers a private sanctuary where they can enjoy simple pleasures like garden games, local excursions, and beach outings to Holkham Beach.”

But Balmoral seems like a solid option in August, and, as Bond said, “The summer stay up there has always been a time primarily for family for a gathering in the peace of the Scottish countryside after the busyness and noise of their working lives in London and elsewhere,” she said, per OK. “It’s a ‘breathe, relax, and be still’ kind of place, and that’s what they all love about it.” (That sounds like exactly what the royal family needs right now.)

Bond continued “And this year, more than ever, they all need to gather themselves and regroup for what they all must hope will be better days to come,” she said.

<![CDATA[ Jonathan Owens Has Responded to Backlash He Received for Saying He's "The Catch" in Marriage to Simone Biles ]]> Jonathan Owens has shared his reaction to backlash he received over comments he made last year about his marriage to Simone Biles.

"I have all my social media notifications off, so I didn’t even know for a while," Owens told Us Weekly of the uproar he ushered in online. "I was actually with my mom and Simone whenever it came out, so, all the comments and everything, I just let them read it. I try to stay off of it, and obviously if you feel like stuff is kind of getting out of hand, that’s when you reach in and say something."

He continued, "I don’t mean to cuss, but like, damned if you do, damned if you don’t. If you say something, they’re going to say something; if you don’t say something, they’re going to say something. So, just live your life. People are going to talk about you anyway, so you might as well do it the way you want to."

In December, Owens—a football safety for the Chicago Bears—famously said during an interview that he felt he was "the catch" in his marriage to Biles, who is the most decorated gymnast in literal history. Yeah, I know, the math isn't mathing.

Anyway, as one might expect, people weren't pleased by Owens' comments, and widely criticized him on social media afterwards.

Speaking on Call Her Daddy in April, Biles said that she had no idea his comments would land that way for people, and was incredibly hurt by it all. "I'm like, 'Why are you guys talking about my husband like this?'" she told host Alex Cooper. "Like you don't know him, you don't know who he is, and if anybody's met him, they know he's the sweetest guy and will do anything for anybody."

Biles recently qualified for this year's Paris Olympics, and Owens has been sure to share his unwavering support for his wife on social media. "Just sounds so surreal being able to say my wife is the best to EVER do it, how did i get so lucky," he wrote on one recent Instagram post. Aw!

<![CDATA[ Scarlett Johansson Jokes About Prenup With Colin Jost Forcing Him to Cameo on Her Latest Movie ]]> Scarlett Johansson just made a pretty unexpected joke about husband Colin Jost.

The actress appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to promote her new movie Fly to the Moon, and the host asked her exactly how Jost ended up making a cameo in the film.

"Greg Berlanti who's our director is a huge fan of Colin's, and Colin, like, I think he had to do it because it's, like, in our prenuptial agreement," Johansson said, to audience laughter. "If I ask him to do something he has to be there to support me. He has to be in every one of my films." Fair enough!

Next, Fallon asked Johansson whether she runs her lines with Jost at home, since he is also an actor (though he's mostly known as a comedian), and she explained that he's not necessarily the best person for the job.

"I run lines with him—which is great, you'd think that would be very convenient because you have a partner there to help you out, to learn your lines for tomorrow or whatever," the Black Widow star said. "He really commits to the line-reading, and it's not always the performance I want it to be... I'm like, 'Just say the lines!'"

Fly to the Moon, which hits theaters on July 12, stars Johansson alongside Channing Tatum, plus Woody Harrelson, Jim Rash and Ray Romano. It's a romcom-drama, and is set at the time of the Space Race in the '60s, with Johansson playing an advertising executive and Tatum a NASA official.

Johansson and Jost attended the movie's premiere on July 8 in New York City, with the actress taking inspiration from the '60s for her look. She wore a gingham two-piece consisting of a crop top and a straight-lined long skirt for the occasion.

The two tied the knot in October 2020, and welcomed their first child together, a boy named Cosmo, in August 2021.

<![CDATA[ Julia Fox Seemingly Comes Out as a Lesbian on TikTok ]]> Julia Fox has appeared to come out as a lesbian in a new TikTok.

The star stitched a video with a user saying, "I love when I see a lesbian with their boyfriend. It's like, 'Aaah, you hate that man. You literally hate him,'" and added in her own words, "Heyyy, that was meee. I was that lesbian. So sorry, boys. Um... won't happen again."

In the video, Fox was casually walking down a busy street, while wearing cool-girl sunglasses, a gray tank top and a white handbag with hole punches.

In the comments, fans could not have been happier about Fox' message.

"LOVE YOU JULIA WE’RE SO HAPPY TO HAVE YOU," wrote one person.

"The 'won't happen again' was so perfect and so final," said someone else.

Fox famously dated Kanye West for a few weeks in early 2022, and was previously married to Peter Artemiev between 2018 and 2020. The two share a son named Valentino, born in 2021.

This new TikTok isn't the first time the Uncut Gems actress has addressed her sexuality.

Fox made headlines earlier this year when she revealed she had been celibate for over two years.

"Well—I just think nothing good comes from having sex. Including children—no, I'm just kidding," she said on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen in May. "No, but you know, I think with the overturning of Roe v. Wade, and our rights being stripped away from us, this is a way that I can take back the control."

And speaking on the Nice Talk podcast with Marie Claire editor-in-chief Nikki Ogunnaike in June, Fox said her celibacy was "the consequence of men's repeated actions." You can listen to the full episode below.

<![CDATA[ Princess Kate Would “Dearly Love” to Present the Trophies at Wimbledon This Weekend—But There’s a Contingency Plan Taking Shape If She’s Unable to Make It ]]> The Princess of Wales would “dearly love” to be at Wimbledon this week, a friend of hers speaking to The Daily Beast said—but, as anyone who has experienced it firsthand knows, cancer sometimes has other plans. As she continues to receive treatment for cancer, Wimbledon officials are reportedly putting contingency plans in place if Kate is unable to join them—but more on that in a moment.

Kate has been patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club since 2016, when Queen Elizabeth personally presented Kate—a longtime athlete and lover of tennis—with the patronage. “Nobody has been more important in transforming Wimbledon’s image from slightly fusty sporting ritual to chic, aspirational, and socially fabulous event than its current patron, Catherine, the Princess of Wales,” The Daily Beast writes.

A friend of hers told the outlet “It is no secret that she would dearly love to be there, but when you are having chemo, as she herself said, there are good days and bad days,” they said. “A lot depends on the timing of the treatments. She made it to Trooping the Colour, so if she can make Wimbledon, she will.”

Kate is expected to present the winning trophy to the winner of the women's final on Saturday and the men’s final on Sunday, if she is well enough to do so. But, if that’s not possible, officials have a contingency plan, Tatler reports—if Kate can't be there, “bosses have earmarked the Duchess of Gloucester as a likely candidate to present the Wimbledon trophies if the Princess is unavailable,” the outlet writes. “As discussions continue amidst Kate’s absence, it is understood that informal discussions with the Duchess of Gloucester as a potential replacement have begun.”

A Wimbledon spokesperson told Telegraph Sport that a “decision had yet to be made,” and that the presentation party would only “be confirmed on the morning of each final.” Days ago, Debbie Jevans—chairman of the All England Club—said that Wimbledon is happy to give Kate “as much flexibility as possible” in the leadup to the final, “including a willingness to delay finding a replacement for the ceremony as Kate continues to work on an adjusted calendar,” Tatler writes.

“We’re hopeful that the Princess of Wales will be able to present the trophies as the Club’s patron, but her health and recovery is the priority,” Jevans told Telegraph Sport. “We don’t know what we don’t know. All we’ve said is that we’ll work with her and give her as much flexibility as possible.” Jevans went on to say in that interview that the Club hadn’t considered yet who might replace Kate at the ceremony, though that seems to have been thought through more since.

Birgitte, the Duchess of Gloucester, is married to Queen Elizabeth’s first cousin Prince Richard, the Duke of Gloucester. “Like Kate, Birgitte is an avid tennis fan with a related patronage,” People reports. “The Duchess of Gloucester has been an Honorary President of the Lawn Tennis Association for 25 years, supporting the governing body for tennis in Great Britain. This year, the Duchess of Gloucester has attended the tennis tournament twice since the competition began on July 1.”

The Duchess of Gloucester is a full-time working member of the royal family and recently made royal history with her investiture as a Royal Lady of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, “becoming the first non-blood royal who is not married to the monarch or the heir to the throne to be appointed to the position,” People writes.

According to The Daily Express, a final decision isn’t expected to be made until the morning of the women’s final, which is set for this Saturday, July 13.

<![CDATA[ Could You Imagine Prince William and Prince Harry As Prince Arthur and Prince Albert? Had King Charles Had His Way, That’d Be the Reality ]]> The Prince of Wales’ full name is Prince William Arthur Philip Louis—but it was almost something else entirely, had his father, then Prince Charles, gotten his way.

William Diana Charles At Home

Charles, Diana, and a young William at home; had Charles had his way, William would have gone by a completely different moniker. (Image credit: Tim Graham)

Instead, William’s mother Princess Diana won out, and William was the name chosen for the former Prince and Princess of Wales’ eldest son. Charles, The Mirror reports, wanted Albert or Arthur for his firstborn—but Diana nixed it. In an interview for Andrew Morton’s book Diana: Her True Story—released in 1992 as a biography, but revealed after her death in 1997 that it was really more of an autobiography, as Diana was a contributor to the tell-all—Diana revealed that she actually chose not just William’s name but Prince Harry’s, too (his full name is Prince Henry Charles Albert David—but more on him in a moment).

When asked who picked out the boys’ names, Diana said “I did,” and added “I chose William and Harry, but Charles did the rest [meaning the middle names]. He wanted Albert and Arthur [for the first names], and I said no. Too old!”

Sorry, just trying to imagine William and Harry as Albert and Arthur. Anyway…

Back to Harry: in 2022, while speaking with winners of the WellChild Awards, Harry was talking with a child named Henry when he said “My name is Henry, as well,” he said. “But everyone calls me Harry. I have no idea why.”

The Mirror reports that “Harry is the diminutive form of Henry, a popular nickname that dates back to medieval England,” the outlet reports. “Most monarchs given the name Henry in the past have been nicknamed Harry, including the infamous Henry VIII.”

The more you know!

For the record, Albert and Arthur did end up in the boys’ (well, men now) names after all—if you’ll notice, one of William’s three middle names is Arthur, and one of Harry’s three middle names is Albert. A compromise, if you will, between Charles and Diana—but Diana, you picked well.

<![CDATA[ Meghan Markle Is Apparently Planning a Summer of “Relaxation and Enjoyment” with Her Family Before a “Busy Autumn Coming Up” ]]> Meghan Markle has a ton of work projects on the precipice of being released—her Netflix cookery show (which, we just reported recently, has wrapped filming); her lifestyle brand, American Riviera Orchard; and her forthcoming podcast with Lemonada Media, for starters. But before a “busy autumn” coming up, Meghan and her husband, Prince Harry, are reportedly planning a summer of “relaxation and enjoyment” with their two kids, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, according to OK.

“She wants to use the next couple of months relaxing and having fun after a stressful year so far,” a source shared with the outlet. They added “Meghan wants to escape with Harry and the kids to a remote island, where they can enjoy family time without any external pressures and in complete luxury.”
